Reports are just emerging that two people have been killed in a crash in Marshall County, Indiana, involving an Amish buggy and a motor vehicle.

The Amish in Marshall County would belong to the large Nappanee community, home to over 6,000 Amish people.

From WNDU:

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Two people are dead after a crash on Monday evening involving a vehicle and an Amish buggy.

The crash happened in the area of 8th Road and S. Apple Road.

We’re not sure yet specifically what happened or what led up to the crash, but the Marshall County coroner confirmed with WNDU 16 News Now that two victims have died.

Details on this latest accident at this time are sparse, and that is the report in its entirety. Note that the report does not designate that Amish people specifically were killed.

However, if the accident involved an Amish buggy and a motor vehicle, in all likelihood it was Amish people who were the fatalities, as in the vast majority of such incidents.

The Nappanee area was the location of a tragic pony cart crash in which three Amish children were killed in April.

The accident happened on the evening of June 30th. Will update with more info as it becomes available.

Update

WNDU has updated its reporting to now say it was an Amish husband and wife who died after their buggy was hit by a pickup truck at around 5:45 PM.

The couple’s names and ages are known as well. From WNDU:

The Marshall County coroner says the buggy was heading west on 8th when it was hit from behind by the truck.

Two people who were in the buggy, 62-year-old Aden Chupp and 60-year-old Mary Sue Chupp of Etna Green, died at the scene. The coroner says they were husband and wife.

No other details besides that at this point. Condolences and prayers to the family of the Chupps.

Update #2

WNDU now adds this: “Police say the carriage was being pulled by one horse. There is no word on the horse’s condition.” They also update the estimated time of accident from 5:45 to 5:30 PM.

Happening more and more. More cars on the road. More bad drivers. Society has changed to become more aggressive/impatient. Areas around Amish communities are no longer isolated as much as they once were as over-development is taking hold. Little to no punishment for bad drivers who somehow get to keep their drivers license after committing certain traffic offenses. It’s gonna happen again.

These kinds of accidents have to stop

I live near where there is an Amish community.you should just know to drive slowly when you are driving in that Amish community.Speeding must stop and be aware of the Amish.this is their home this is where their children play you must take care in every single Amish community .If this was speeding or drinking or just not paying attention if you see those buggy signs pay attention children play and buggies are everywhere .

    Amish Couple/Buggy Crash

I wonder if they left behind any children?? Also, do we know if charges will be or have already been, filed against the driver?? Condolences to the family as well as the whole community.

    Again…

That is so sad, and unfortunately too common and completely unnecessary. Slow down people!! We are familiar with the Amish in Napanee, so it hits us harder. Thanks for the updates.
