“Our heart just felt drawn to come help” ~ The Amish Rebuild in NC (11 Images & Video)

Last month we learned how the Amish were helping rebuild in the wonderfully-named town of Bat Cave, NC.

Today it’s a report on how Amish have been helping with Hurricane Helene relief efforts in a nearby town. And we even have some on-camera comments from some of the Amish young people involved.

Chimney Rock is a name I was familiar with growing up, as a famous mountain destination in North Carolina. It’s named for the Chimney Rock outcrop located above the village, affording visitors this spectacular view:

The small village was one of the harder-hit places by flooding due to Hurricane Helene. This new report from WCNC notes that every business in town suffered some sort of damage.

Amish from Pennsylvania have been among the 2,000 volunteers that have come to lend a hand since the storm. The group featured in this story is with Great Needs Trust, an organization based in Strasburg, PA (Lancaster County).

And in this case it’s not just the men and boys – girls and young ladies are involved too.

And as you see here, they’re doing the same kinds of jobs the fellas would do.

“Our heart just felt drawn to come help”, she explained.

This young man shared that “it just fills my heart with joy just watching people get their life back again.”

And watching the video report below, you can see that joy plainly on the faces of the volunteers.

I have something of a personal connection to this story, but that noted, I found it especially moving.

One side note, I also love hearing the contrast in accents here – a quite familiar NC-sounding southern accent from the village’s mayor, contrasted with the PA Dutch-tinged English of the Amish.

If you’re wondering why Amish are appearing on camera here – in a nutshell, it is less of a taboo in some communities than you might think – and also, all things considered, younger Amish people are more apt to do so.

I really recommend watching the two-and-a-half-minute report here:

Yep. That accent is very clear when the lady says ‘drawn to come help’ and ‘pull together.’

    I know that accent. Lol
