Easy As Pie: 300 Amish Move A Pole Barn (14 Images & Video)

Compared to the last barn move we saw, this one is a lot more straightforward. But still quite impressive.

The Amish – reportedly 300 of them (though again I’m not always sure how accurate these numbers are) – pick up and move a 45′ x 72′ pole barn.

They carry it directly forward to its new resting spot, for a distance of what looks a bit longer than the length of the building – around 80-90 feet.

This happened in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. Why were they doing this move? The purpose was “to make way for a new house” (video via ViralHog).

Here you’ve got just one Amish man shouting directions – not like in the previous video, where due to the size and complexity of the move, the leader had to use a loudspeaker to deliver more complex instructions.

“Lift!” commands the move leader, and the pole barn rises about 18 inches into the air. “That was easy,” a bystander comments. Well, with 300 pairs of hands, I guess it’s as easy as pie 🙂

After a brief pause, the men begin marching forward.

Zooming in, we see the men on this side have the structure lifted all the way up, pretty much fully extended above their heads. I haven’t seen it done like that before.

It appears the other end of the barn is not quite coordinated with them though, as it seems to tilt down to that end. The Amish man with his hands out at his side has just run up to make sure a young boy stays clear.

There are at least two more men helping to coordinate things.

Keep it coming.

Keep those legs moving.

A young boy comes up for a closer look.

Nearly there – as a crowd of young observers awaits.

Just a few more feet to go…

Having reached the end point, the move coordinators raise their arms to bring the men to a halt.

The job finished, everyone gathers around for a closer look.

As is usually the case, people came out to watch the move happen, both Amish and non-Amish.

Hillsboro is a sizable community with well over 1,000 Amish living there, so I suppose they didn’t have a lot of trouble finding help. Check out the video in full here (1:40 long).

Interestingly, this is not the first time the Amish of this Hillsboro, WI community have been filmed moving a barn. This neat barn move from 2020 has been viewed over seven million times.

I love the barn moving photos and videos. The coordination, cooperation, and community spirit—so inspiring. I cannot imagine how good it would feel to be part of a social and religious group that works together this way. The more I have learned and the more Amish I meet, I believe they are truly blessed to be born into their group.
