DUI Driver Hits Amish Buggy; It Tips Over & Drags Down The Road

This had to be frightening. The 22-year-old Amish woman inside was dragged down the road (while still inside the buggy, fortunately). Also, fortunately, it turns out she is alright.

Yet another bad experience delivered by an (alleged) DUI driver. This one happened in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Here’s more via the Daily Voice:

Brad J. Rodarmel, 46, was driving a 2005 Honda Pilot when he tried to pass and struck the buggy near 730 E. King St. in Shippensburg, troopers said.

The impact caused the buggy to tip onto its passenger side and be dragged down the road by the horse pulling it, police said.

Rodarmel was arrested for DUI and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol/controlled substance, troopers said.

It may have been better for her that it tipped over onto the passenger side and not the driver side. The incident actually occurred back on November 19th, but was only announced recently by PA State Police.

The town of Shippensburg in fact lies in two counties, both having an Amish presence – Cumberland and Franklin. Based on where this happened, I would think it more likely it involved someone from the Cumberland County community around Newburg and Cumberland Valley, home to over 1,200 Amish people.

DUI drivers keep hitting Amish buggies

This is only one of the (alleged) recent DUI drivers to hit an Amish buggy. Earlier this month, two were injured in a DUI incident in Centre County, PA.

This summer saw bad DUI wrecks involving Amish victims in Kentucky and in Michigan. And two days from now, a man will be sentenced – possibly for life – for his role in a wreck which claimed an Amish boy’s life in Indiana.

Based on all the experience we’ve had, people aren’t going to stop driving under the influence anytime soon. Prison doesn’t really seem to deter drunk driving. But sooner or later, maybe technology can solve this problem.
