Amish Lake Deaths: Ruth Miller Deemed Mentally Competent To Stand Trial In Death Of 4-Year-Old Son; Trial Date Now Set

A judge has found Ruth Miller, 40, mentally competent to stand trial, following a psychologist’s assessment of the Amish mother. And a trial date has now been set.

Miller was charged with aggravated murder for the death of her four-year-old son Vincen, among other charges relating to Vincen and her other, teenaged children, following a series of bizarre incidents at a recreational lake in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Her mental competence had come into question for various reasons, including her erratic behavior, and statements she made at the lake, where both her husband and son lost their lives in late August. Miller was taken to a secure mental health facility following the incidents.

In September, Miller entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity at her arraignment in September. At the time, her attorney Ian N. Friedman made comments on the appropriateness of the plea: “This case would not have happened but for a mental defect that would have prevented Ms. Miller from appreciating the wrongfulness of her conduct.”

Though she had shown signs of suffering from mental illness, medication has helped to address that, according to the psychologist who evaluated her. From the Canton Repository:

Tuscarawas County Prosecutor Ryan Styer summarized the conclusions of competency by psychologist Daniel Hrinko who saw Miller on Oct. 31.

Hrinko had found Miller had been suffering from a mental illness that included symptoms of delusion. However, she was taking medication, which significantly improved the symptoms. Therefore, he found that she was competent to stand trial.

Neither Styer or Miller’s attorneys disclosed Hrinko’s findings on whether Miller due to her mental illness on Aug. 23 did not realize the wrongfulness of her actions.

Both parties are on the same page here, in some sense. Both county prosecutors and Miller’s attorneys agreed that she “is fit to stand trial and assist in her own defense.”

That noted, there was some dispute over using Hrinko’s insanity assessment as evidence at trial. Miller’s attorney’s had filed a motion attempting to exclude the assessment from evidence, taking issue with a letter sent by Prosecutor Ryan Styer to Hrinko “seeking to legally define ‘wrongfulness'”.

However, Miller’s side ended up withdrawing the motion. That issue gets a bit into the legal weeds so if you’re interested I encourage you to check out the full article at the link.

Ruth Miller’s Trial Coming Next Year

A trial date has been set for March 4th, 2026:

Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Judge Michael Ernest set a court date of March 4 to begin to seat a jury to decide whether Miller is not guilty by reason of insanity.

Miller, who was present at the hearing on Nov. 25, waived her right to a speedy trial by Feb. 7 in order to allow her attorneys enough time to prepare for her trial.

This report is the first significant news that we’ve seen for about two months on this case, since Miller was denied bail in late September.

So it appears that, barring delay of some sort, a trial will happen a little over three months from now. The next hearing in the lead-up to the trial will happen in early January.

    Ruth Miller Trial Set

Gee, that was fast. This all happened in late August & already a psychologist has deemed Mrs. Miller “competent” to stand trial?? She’s only been on medication since September. One would think that her defense would try to somehow slow down these proceedings down a bit so as to give these medications more time to help her. But as I’m no mental health expert, I can only hope that all involved in her case know what they’re doing. I believe she falls under the category of “Vulnerable Adult” and I hope a judge considers allowing for lesser charges and that a jury agrees. I don’t think she’s a danger to others at this point, but think she just might be a danger to herself. I feel a mental health hospital would be more appropriate as I doubt she could survive prison. But this is just my opinion of course . . . God be with her.

      Wow!

This woman allegedly killed her son. I think prison is perfect for her

        Ruth Miller . . .

Hi, Liz. Yes, I think we all agree that Ruth Miller “killed” her 4yr old son. But due to her mental state (before and after the day in question) she may not have been in her ‘right mind’ and therefore what she (allegedly) did, may or may not meet the legal definition of what she was charged with. That’s all I was trying to say. Hope you had a lovely Th’giving and that you enjoy a nice weekend. K.D.

God be with Joel Trace, Jordan Tate and Amber Michelle….I couldn’t imagine what they are going through. Prayers for everyone in the Fairview South Gma Dale (Church District). R.I.P little bro Vincen and R.I.P Marcus Jay Miller. I wonder how this is going to go now that she is seen as mentally competent. I think she will get life sadly…I know what she did was terrible but anyone who is mentally competent isn’t going to do this.
