Indiana Amish Auction Scenes: Part Two (12 Photos)

Last week we enjoyed some photos from the most recent Yoder’s Consignment Auction in northern Indiana, courtesy of Jim Halverson. Here is part two of that set. This is one of the larger auctions in the area and draws a crowd.

Amish auctions are great to attend – even just for the atmosphere and the food. If you’ve never been and you get the chance to go to one, I highly encourage you to check it out. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these photos by Jim.

I really like this one. I’ve never tried that, but I think it’s harder than it looks. Unlike in some Amish settlements, bicycles are common in this community.

Refrigerators. If you look at the black one the man is holding, on the upper left you can just make out the diamond logo of Crystal Cold, an Illinois-based Amish refrigerator company. They make propane and natural gas fridges popular among the Amish.

This shot through the buggy shows us the feature listing on this “pre-owned” vehicle.

I’ve saved you the trouble of trying to read that backwards: this one has a lot of new things about it – new interior, oilcloth, paint, fenders, frameless fronts, safety screens, steel singletree (a singletree is an implement used to evenly distribute the pulling force of the horse) and new tires.

The buggies in this community would be among the more progressive ones you’ll find tech-wise.

Another buggy view with a neat reflection.

Checking out a boat. When I first visited this community years ago, I was a bit surprised to see them parked in Amish driveways. But they’re popular with some Amish folks here.

Again, it’s a more progressive community when it comes to tech, though there is variation across the many church districts, with conservative pockets.

Taking a break, or maybe test-driving a potential purchase.

Auctions are for the whole family.

Heading home by pony cart with the day’s haul. Funny to see those big wheels on that very small-wheeled cart.

The dress of these women has a plainer look to it than what is typical in the Elkhart-LaGrange settlement, and I suspect they are not from this community. Perhaps they are from Adams County, Indiana.

Heading out or just getting here?

They come and go by foot, bicycle, buggy, and Amish taxi.

And one bonus photo. Heading home with an auction haul. Looks like it was a successful day. Check out the comfy seating, also not uncommon in this particular community.

Thanks again to Jim for giving us a peek at this event.
