Haley Straw May 30, 2026 at 6:53 pm on Ben & Rose AND Mike & Marty: “Palms of Victory”I have to admit, I hadn't listened to Ben and Rose's music until this week. Now I'm wondering what took me so long! Their music is simple, heartfelt, and it lifts my spirits. As the Amish say, "A happy heart sings." I think Ben and Rose prove that pretty well.
Sharon OConnor May 30, 2026 at 5:13 pm on 5 Lesser-Known Holidays Observed By AmishMost of the holidays I see, my great grandmother celebrated. She passed on in 1973. We are Anglican Episcopal. What amazes me is how close the holidays are to what is to be, ie fasting prayer and more however, I also have the other side being German. It is very comforting g to learn the ways she had and held. Those will not be lost. Hoping that Americanizing the beauty and more of these holidays is not lost in the fray. Still make so many recipes and more and never knew why until I moved to MD. Skills family church and more from my childhood are all coming back. Nana left me more than recipes, she left me her heart. She also left me her love of God. Pa she was born in England, survived several wars and proudly raised her children way after her husband passed. Her survival skills have come home here I am truly blessed. And it is nice to know after living g in the suburbs of my past place NY I am not nuts. Just was displaced. God be praised.

N K May 29, 2026 at 7:53 am on “More Than Just a Store”: Michigan Amish Grocery Burns To The GroundI don't know what the size of this store was but it seems like it was well-known and prominent in the community. I have Amish friends who work in similar large discount grocery stores and a second shift working past midnight is not unusual. They typically are sorting through the products and getting them ready for the shelves, more labor intensive than a regular grocery store because of the ever changing variety and diversity of the goods and the state they may be in.
K.D. May 28, 2026 at 8:27 pm on “More Than Just a Store”: Michigan Amish Grocery Burns To The GroundI also found it odd that employees would be on site at such a late hour. Hhmmm ??
Catherine M May 28, 2026 at 6:37 pm on Michigan Woman Gets 6 Years in Prison for DUI Crash That Killed 8-Year-Old Amish GirlAn 8 year old girl with her whole life ahead of her. I am appalled. If you don't know by now that driving while intoxicated whether it be drugs, alcohol or a medical condition you must be living in a cave somewhere. Not to forget she had her own children in the car with her! My heart goes out to her family.
Greg Moler May 28, 2026 at 1:59 pm on Ohio Has Over 86,000 Amish — These Are the State’s 10 Biggest CommunitiesHi Erik, I appreciate this list, thank you for compiling and posting it! Since I am beginning a research project (actually restarting) on Amish communities, this will come in very handy. I live in Williamsburg Virginia and on my way back to Illinois to visit my mom about few months, I plan on stopping by as many communities as I'm able. Thank you, Greg
L. A. Stanly May 27, 2026 at 6:00 pm on School Board Member: The Amish Weren’t “Used” To Vote Down School Budget – They Simply “Did the Math”Since ALL property owners (Amish or not) would be affected by a 40% increase in taxes, it seems they would behooved to also rally against the free-spending "progressive" politicians attempting to bully this ludicrous increased burden on their constituents. If "trucking in" voters who lack transportation is necessary to defeat this, then let those truckers roll!

Erik Wesner May 27, 2026 at 1:21 pm on 1-800-CHATGPT: How Some Amish Are Using A.I.Well we were in the same boat on this one as far as not hearing of it! Not sure I'm keen to try it out but interesting to learn of it. And yes in keeping with the theme of this post, the three images in it were made with AI (I put a note on that in the captions), and the woman's look especially is not quite there. It was better than some of the ones it produced, though 🙂
K.D. May 27, 2026 at 7:49 am on Michigan Woman Gets 6 Years in Prison for DUI Crash That Killed 8-Year-Old Amish GirlAt least she got more time than the MN sisters. She should serve every single day. Just my opinion . . .
Mary May 27, 2026 at 6:51 am on 1-800-CHATGPT: How Some Amish Are Using A.I.This is unheard of for me and yes, I am Amish. The picture of the couple with the envelope, it says he has a wavy grey beard and its a brown beard in the picture and she is most definitely coming through as not Amish with her covering. I could be wrong, but it looks more like a PA "cap" and he is not looking like a PA man. But like I said, I could be wrong and there are many different communities.

Carolyn B May 26, 2026 at 2:22 pm on Ohio County: The Amish Need To Pay For Damaging The RoadsWhy don't they stop every trucker and make them pay for the repairs for the highway also, they make bigger potholes than a horse and buggy, here in Randolph County, Arkansas our roads are so bad they set the alarm off in our pickup, and I was wearing my seat belt, stupid truck! That's how bad the roads are all over this part of the state. So stop picking on a community that y'all know nothing about. Semi trucks are the worst. Sun City, AZ many years ago took the school boards, and Arizona State, to court and won against school taxes, because they are over 55, and they have no children in their community or school. Arizona stopped making them pay for something they didn't use.

RLC May 26, 2026 at 12:54 am on Once-Amish Man Running Unlicensed Health Facility Claimed To Have Treated Over 70 Cancer PatientsI only use natural remedies or whole food supplements. I have a torn knee and when it happened oh the pain and swelling. I kept putting on comfrey which can be used in a few forms also helps to knit broken bones. You can dry the leaves and apply or you can get an ointment or slave. Works very well esp. for the swelling. I also took some silica in a whole foods form supplement. Teas are good for things like cough, flu, colds, there are many different teas you can make from plants that treat different types of ailments. Or you can buy these teas as well. God did gives us a lot of plants to use as medicine.

Haley Straw May 25, 2026 at 4:41 pm on Once-Amish Man Running Unlicensed Health Facility Claimed To Have Treated Over 70 Cancer PatientsAs an Amish taxi driver, I’ve driven passengers to all kinds of Plain-run healing locations over the years—from clinics in someone's backyard to informal chiropractic adjustments right in a dining room - and to The Old Cabin Retreat. The Amish naturally prefer a holistic approach to health and will often try natural remedies and herbs first before turning to modern drugs or surgery. They support each other's businesses, live their ways, and deeply trust in God’s plan for their lives. However, it's important to bring up that this man is no longer Amish, and once individuals leave the community, the dynamics can change drastically. There are always three sides to every story, so it will be very interesting to see how this all pans out in court
Mark Louden May 25, 2026 at 4:21 pm on Once-Amish Man Running Unlicensed Health Facility Claimed To Have Treated Over 70 Cancer PatientsOne thing I noted in the social media advertisement quoted here is that the Old Cabin Retreat was apparently a private membership association ("Memberships only"). It is increasingly common for Plain people and others providing alternative forms of healthcare for payment and selling certain goods (e.g., raw milk products) to create PMAs to protect themselves from legal liability. It's becoming clear that there are limits to the protection that PMAs provide.

Cherylcake May 24, 2026 at 8:40 am on Amish Fishermen Caught & Kept a Giant 40-Pound Muskie and Some Are Not Happy About ItIf it's that big, it probably had many chances to reproduce. And therefore, has done its job as a species. I don't think it's the Amish that are depleting our national resources, just by the fact that there aren't that many of them compared to the rest of the English population. I'm sure the family had a big feast over that one, and didn't waste a scrap.
Dale A Nolt May 23, 2026 at 4:59 pm on Five Amish Desserts Not To Miss (…And 2 To SKIP)The 2 treats to avoid on your list. Are my favorites and I believe you are not qualified to make such a list. Whoppie pies are awesome but you need someone making them from scratch not commercial grade. The shoe fly pies are great but you need a good crust made with lard. None of these are healthy that's why we have them as treats. I know this because my grandma made 17 pies a week for her family. And she was a great baker. The list of 5 items I would not change.
Matthew May 23, 2026 at 9:27 am on Superintendent Claims Hundreds of Amish Were “Trucked In” To Vote Down a School BudgetFirst, Erik, very well written. Second we don't do things here like this. The Community spoke and the stupid game they tried to play gets shut down. Kelly should be removed as he does not reflect the standards or values of our community in Randolph. Woke won't work here!

Amy Estey May 22, 2026 at 6:45 pm on Pickup Hits Amish Buggy Pulling a Boat Before Dawn — Horse Killed, Five InjuredAs a young professional in the early 1990s, I moved to NE Ohio where a somewhat similar accident had just occurred. The local bishops agreed the Slow-Moving Vehicle sign could be used and a campaign started to educate everyone involved. Now, decades later, we're having the same discussion, not many miles from the earlier incident. I have since lived in and near Lancaster Co. (PA) and have noticed that the buggies here are pretty well lighted with brake lights, turn signals, and reflective tape. It's particularly distressing that some in the Amish community think it's ok to drive in the dark with no visibility whatsoever, and that local/county/state lawmakers and law enforcement can't seem to address the issue as they did decades ago. When religious beliefs endanger everyone using the same roads, maybe it's time to reconsider the priorities. Thanks.
