Two Amish Children, Ages 7 & 13, Killed After Van Strikes Two Buggies (New York)
More awful news out of New York. Another buggy crash in the state claimed two more lives today – this time two young children, ages 7 and 13.
A van struck two buggies this morning (Friday September 25) in Richland in Oswego County, New York. The state has been seeing a lot of this lately. Just twelve days ago, a grandmother and her grandson lost their lives in a crash in St. Lawrence County.
Syracuse.com reports, citing a New York State Police news release:
Richland, N.Y. — Two children were killed when a van struck a pair of Amish buggies in Oswego County Friday morning.
A 2017 Dodge van was going south on Route 41 in Richland just after 9 a.m. when it struck the two buggies that were also going south, Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a state police spokesperson, said in a news release.
One buggy was carrying four people. The other was carrying five.
The two children were pronounced dead on the scene, and another child, age 9, suffered critical injuries, and was taken to hospital in Syracuse.
State police have not released the names of the children or said how they are related to one another. A total of nine people were riding in the two buggies.
This story is just breaking and reports at this point have not said whether anyone else was hurt. The van was being driven by a 47-year-old woman from Sandy Creek, NY. An investigation is ongoing.
Oswego County is a sizeable county bordering Lake Ontario. Richland on the eastern side of the county lies near the village of Pulaski. So the nearest Amish community is the Pulaski / Williamstown settlement. Oswego County has three separate settlements, but that is the big one by far, at around 700 people. Given the area and size, that is the most likely candidate for home community of these people.
Second Deadly Buggy Crash In Upstate New York This Month
On September 13, a pickup truck struck an Amish buggy carrying 10 people in the town of Canton, in St. Lawrence County. A 78-year-old grandmother and her 4-year-old grandson were killed. As noted in our last post on the story, neighbors have since started a fundraiser for the family.
Both that crash and this one happened with the motor vehicle traveling in the same direction as the buggies. New York has also had at least one other wreck in the time between these two, a non-fatal one two days ago, also in St. Lawrence County.
There are not a lot of details at this stage and not a whole lot more to be commented on. Prayers for the parents and family members of these children.
