2 Killed After Pickup Truck Hits Amish Buggy In Upstate New York
Two people were killed and several others seriously hurt Sunday afternoon when a pickup truck and an Amish buggy collided in the town of Canton in St. Lawrence County, New York.
The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office initially reported one death, then raised the count to two Sunday night. According to WWNY 7 News, the crash happened around 3 p.m. Sunday on County Route 25 near Little River Road, roughly ten minutes outside Canton. The station reported that several people were seriously hurt in addition to the two killed. The reporting is pretty thin beyond that.
The Sheriff’s Office has not identified the people killed, said how many were riding in the buggy, described the pickup driver, or explained how the buggy was hit. No charges have been announced. The crash remains under investigation. As of this writing no written release has been posted by the Sheriff’s Office.
St. Lawrence County is home to six Amish settlements — more than any other county in New York. We don’t know for sure which community these people belong to, but County Route 25 runs southeast out of Canton toward Russell, where a small Amish settlement of around 110 people was founded in 2017. That appears to be the nearest Amish community to where this happened.
County Traffic Safety Office Flagged A Rise In Buggy Crashes Last December
In December, the St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety Office issued a public statement noting an increase in motor vehicle crashes involving Amish buggies in the county, and urging drivers to take extra care. That was mostly about reduced visibility and worse road conditions heading into winter.
This is not the first serious crash in the town of Canton. In July 2025, a driver struck a buggy on County Route 14 and left the scene, seriously injuring two of the three people riding in it, and was later charged with a felony.
