Peek Inside the Best Amish Bakery in Holmes County, Ohio (17 Photos)

Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery is one of the best-known – and if you ask me, best – bakeries in the Holmes County, Ohio Amish community. Now, have I been to every last one? No, definitely not.

But Hershberger’s has a lot going for it:
- Big selection of quality, tasty things (not only baked goods, but canned goods, produce, bulk items, cheese and more)
- A signature item it’s famous for (fry pies)
- Good location more-or-less in the center of the community (about a five minute drive from Berlin, the area’s most famous tourist town)

It calls itself a bakery but it’s definitely more than just a bakery. Add in their Farm Store, as well as Hershberger’s other offerings – including burgers, kettle corn stand, as well as a petting zoo for the kids – and I’m not sure you’re going to top it. So I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb calling it “the best”.

I had a chance to stop in at Hershberger’s last month. So let’s check out a few of my photos showing just a portion of what you’ll find inside.
Peanut Butter Dream Bars. These were good. I have to say that based on having a single bite…as I ended up giving the rest away (d’oh!). But was glad to.

They had a number of dessert bars (which as a category, have really become one of my favorite types of desserts made by the Amish):

The cheese tarts were great. Truth be told I haven’t had these much, but they’re now a new favoright:

Hey how about some “imported” horseradish? Heh-heh.

I have to admit, I had not heard of “white trash” before. Not the snack mix, anyway.

Closer up, we see that it is a Chex-mix based snack – a bunch of trail mix stuff thrown together and covered in white chocolate, hence the name.

But if White Trash isn’t your thing, maybe a bite of Puppy Chow?

As you can see, this is also a Chex mix-based snack, and I assume meant for humans rather than canines.

One thing you can say, these product names aren’t boring. Oh yea, here is a shot of the more healthy stuff (if you must). In-season, they’re going to have a lot more on offer as far as produce.

I didn’t take a ton of photos in the store, and what you see here is just scratching the surface of what they have on offer – there is a nice selection of cheeses and some tasty beef jerky I enjoyed, for example. They were also selling gift baskets as it was prior to Christmas.

Just keep in mind they certainly have busier seasons, and not everything is going to be up and running all the time – for example, the kettle corn and hamburgers I believe is more a warm-weather thing.

The Amish girl at the checkout told me they just had gotten through one of their busier times of year – autumn – when a lot of people visit the area to enjoy Amish Country plus fall foliage. And as it happened, the place was almost empty when I visited (mid-December about a half-hour before closing time).

Hershberger’s has been here quite a while – I want to say since at least the mid-2000s – and is clearly set up to cater to visitors to Amish Country.

But it’s not just for Car People – I understand that is is popular with Amish people as well. As you can probably tell, it’s a pretty big operation as far as Amish bakeries go…in contrast to another, cozier bakery we visited recently – Peachey’s.

Interesting post. Loved the photos.
Totally Agree...
Erik, I haven’t visited all the Amish places you have, and although I may have been to a place or two you have yet to get to I must agree that I haven’t found an Amish bakery that quite equals Hershberger’s. It’s definitely on our must-visit list any time we are through that area. I’m a little old for a petting zoo any more, but still I could spend half a day watching the antics of the miniature goats out playing in their playground. All the baked good I’ve had there were scrumptious! It’s been a while back so my mind is a little fuzzy on it, but on one visit we bought a gallon jug of some kind of juice — maybe muscadine (?) — that was really good. An all-time favorite place to stop!
