Inside An Unusual Amish Home – With Its Own Schoolhouse (17 Photos)

Today’s Amish home is found in Scioto County, Ohio. A standout feature of this Amish property is a second home – which, as we’ll see in the photos, has been used as a schoolhouse for the community (more on why below).
Scioto County lies in southern Ohio, right on the border with Kentucky. There are actually two separate, but very small Amish communities in this area – perhaps two dozen people each.

And this may tell us why there is a schoolhouse in a building on the property. The community would use what space was already available – until it grows large enough to justify building a separate conventional Amish school.
It’s hardly typical for an Amish home to be set up as a schoolhouse – but not unheard of in smaller communities. By the looks of this photo, this would be quite a small class, but they might not have all the desks in here right now.

From the description:
What a nice home! Amish-owned property featuring 29 beautiful acres; half wooded and half fenced fields. Enjoy two ponds and a fruit orchard with apples, pears, peaches, and plums.
The 32×48 barn includes stalls and a lean-to, perfect for livestock or storage.
The main home was completely remodeled in 2021 and is well-designed, with an additional home currently being used as a schoolhouse. A great property with endless possibilities!!
The home itself is quite basic in structure – it’s a shop home, in fact. You notice that immediately, looking at the walls and ceiling. Contrast that with the walls of the school building above.
This place was built to first live in, but to later be used as a workshop of some sort (or other functional space). These can still make cozy places to live.

Another view of this space shows hats and scarves hung up on the wall, as well as coats. Nice rockers.

Here we have a better look at the kitchen area. Looks like a still-growing family. A lamp hangs from a hook in the ceiling. Nearby, a strip of fly paper. Another ceiling hook in the left foreground, if you need to re-position your light source.

The home has a total of three bedrooms; here’s one in an attic-style space with the sloped ceilings.

A door in this room opens onto a second-level exit/entry outside (visible in the photo below).

Another one. Amish families often hang birthday cards or other greeting cards up on string, or on walls or doors as seen here, as a form of decor.

This is the tightest fit of the three; watch your head!

Stairs leading up to the second floor. They also work in reverse.

Nice store of canned goods.

Utility room with a jumbo-sized freezer.

Another look at the schoolhouse space in the second home. You’d still be able to fit a good number of scholars in this space.

A look at the property and buildings outside. Yes, that buggy has just three wheels on it. Tire change?

This looks like a very pleasant space for outdoor relaxation. Obviously it’s been some months, at least, since these photos were taken.

So how much is this property, set on 29 acres of land?

It’s currently on the market at a price of $475,000, represented by Justin Brewster of Brewster Real Estate and Auction Co. An interesting property that could make a very nice home for someone.

You know you’re getting old when you think a rocking chair looks nice! I love that outdoor sitting area its definitely something I would use quite often. The plants bring life to the sitting area.
Heheh well I think I’ve long appreciated a good rocker, though maybe more lately? So yes that could be what’s going on here 🙂
Metal walls
Why does a shop house need all of its walls, even the stairs walls, covered in metal?
Well it’s the more industrial-type material that a workshop would be built with, and I think in theory cheaper and faster to build. These are generally meant to be temporary dwellings until a family builds a more conventional home.
Are the Amish leaving the area?

No, not as far as I know. As Erik mentioned this is a community of maybe 2 dozen so they could be moving to a larger community or building on a different piece of land.
