Three Kentucky Buggy Crashes: Amish 19-Year-Old Killed In Van Collision; Hit & Run Leaves 3 Injured, One Seriously

There have been a spate of car-buggy crashes reported in Kentucky over the past several days. Some quite serious, starting with this wreck in central Kentucky which claimed a young man’s life.
1. 19-Year-Old Killed in Casey County
First, the most serious (at least at this point). It involved a van and a buggy driven by a 19-year-old Amish male. This happened in Casey County, which has two Amish communities and a total Amish population of about 500.

From the report at WKYT:
CASEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) — A 19-year-old Amish man was killed Tuesday morning in a crash involving a van and a buggy in Casey County.
According to sheriff’s office, the crash happened around 7 a.m. on Highway 127 near Highway 501.
The sheriff’s office says an adult and three children were inside the van. One of the children was injured in the crash.
The 19-year-old operating the buggy was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
The investigation continues. Not much more is publicly known at this point.
2. Hit and Run Leaves Three Amish Injured, One Seriously
The police are seeking a culprit in this wreck which left one passenger with two broken legs and another in hospital in “serious condition”. The person who created this pain and mess decided it was best to run.
This one happened in Nicholas County, not too far from Lexington. The county has an Amish community of over 500 people.

From LEX 18:
CARLISLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — A hit-and-run driver struck an Amish buggy from behind on a Nicholas County road Saturday night, leaving one passenger in serious condition and two others injured before allegedly fleeing the scene.
The collision occurred at around 11:53 p.m. on Concrete Road (KY 36) when an unknown vehicle rear-ended the buggy and drove away, according to Kentucky State Police Post 6 Dry Ridge.
A passenger in the buggy reportedly suffered serious injuries and was taken to UK Hospital, where they remain in serious condition, KSP reported. A second passenger was taken to the hospital with fractures to both legs, while the buggy driver was treated and released.
The suspect’s vehicle is a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup. The police have located it, but have not yet found the driver. They ask for the public’s help; please contact KSP Post 6 at 859-428-1212 or your local dispatch.
3. Two in hospital after car strikes buggy driven by a “juvenile”
Finally, a third wreck occurred Monday evening in Barren County in the area of Glasgow. The county has three separate Amish settlements; the one near Glasgow is also home to about 500 Amish people.

From News 40:
GLASGOW, Ky. – Two people have been transported after a collision involving an Amish buggy in Glasgow.
The Barren County Sheriff’s Office says it responded Monday evening for an injury collision on South Fork Road near Sugar Hill Drive.
Upon arrival, deputies say it was determined a 2009 Nissan Maxima driven by 42-year-old Kasey Gupton of Glasgow struck an Amish buggy operated by a juvenile.
No other details are given on their condition besides the fact that they were taken to hospital.
Kentucky is covered with small Amish communities, with well over 50 scattered across the state. So it’s not surprising to see a spate of accidents like this. Sadly one resulted in a death and there are serious injuries to others.

3 Kentucky Buggy Accidents
Sweet Mother of God! And to think ALL of these (alleged) “accidents” occurred in the SAME state and in a short time- span. So sad to know someone lost his life, but I’m grateful he was pronounced at the scene (as opposed to lingering in a hospital bed) and I have no doubt his family and community will miss him dearly. As for the injured, we can only hope & pray they heal up fast and have no serious lasting effects. I reckon they determined the make and model of the one vehicle as anytime you’re involved in a front end collision, you leave behind pieces of plastic from your headlights. Such items contain serial numbers, so no doubt that’s how police knew about the make & model of the vehicle. And since they’ve found the vehicle, I have no doubt they will find the driver soon. C’mon now folks, you just gotta slow down out there and keep your eyes open and on the road. Remember, texting and fiddling with the radio while driving just isn’t worth it. Prayers for everyone involved.
Stop and slow down
It just breaks your heart to hear of Amish being injured and even killed because people will not stop and pay attention and slow down. If you’re running behind leave earlier . Remember you are not the only ones on the road. Prayers for all the families
