New From Ben & Rose: “Twilight is Stealing”

We got an intriguing short clip of this song back in August. So I’m happy to see Ben and Rose release the full studio song with video.
I found it intriguing due to its background. It’s a hymn written by Aldine Kieffer and B.C. Unseld way back in the late 1800s.

That’s not so old compared to, say, Ausbund hymns. But for songs rendered in more contemporary ways, it is.
It was also interesting to learn that this was first recorded way back in the 1920s. I just love this early version of the song by the Dykes Magic City Trio:
I also like the use of “stealing” in its more poetic, less-often-seen meaning: “to move somewhere quietly or surreptitiously”.

Here are the lyrics:
Twilight is Stealing
Twilight is stealing over the sea
Shadows are falling dark on the lee
Born on the night winds voices of yore
Come from that far off shoreFar away beyond the starlit skies
Where the lovelight never never dies
Gleameth a mansion filled with delight
Sweet happy home so brightVoices of loved ones songs of the past
Still linger round me while life shall last
Lonely I wander sadly I roam
Seeking a far off homeCome in the twilight come come to me
Bringing some message from over the sea
Cheering my pathway while here I roam
Seeking that far off home

We see something new here as well, with Ben and Rose joined in the video by members of a backing band. Producer Conrad Fisher appears on guitar (also plays banjo on the track), along with Mark Davis on bass and Jordan Davis on drums.
It’s really a lovely tune, and I hope you enjoy a listen here:

New Song from Rose and Ben
Wow!! To be so young and so talented. I wonder what that’s like?? Lol. I’m not exactly a country music fan (was raised on a strict diet of rock-n-roll) but their music I simply LOVE. It’s uplifting, unlike some country songs that mainly mention heartbreak , pain and loss. Thanks, Erik!
Absolutely KD – this one is a real earworm!
Twilight is Stealing
It also has Ben singing the lead. It’s my new favorite and I could easily see Ben and Rose performing at the Kennedy Center alone or as a feature in a faith based concert.
Hear hear! Nice to hear Ben on lead as well and great backing vocals by Rose on this one. Hat tip to the banjo and rhythm section as well!
