Twice in One Community? Amish Children Run Over by AMISH Vehicles…Twice in One Week
Twice in one week, two small children were run over by horse-drawn Amish vehicles – in the very same Amish community.
This is out of Schuyler County, Missouri. The accidents sound quite bad when you read them, and led to serious injuries…but thankfully, it seems both children will be okay. From KTVO:
SCHUYLER COUNTY, Mo. — Two young Amish children from northeast Missouri were run over in separate accidents in the past week.
Both incidents happened in Schuyler County.
The most recent accident happened just before 4 p.m. Saturday on Route Y northwest of Greentop.
Schuyler County Deputy Dave Crawford told KTVO that a five-year-old boy fell out of an Amish buggy, and a wheel ran across his back.
The youngster suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center. Crawford said the boy is expected to be okay.
As for the second incident, the child was even younger – and when you read it, it at least sounds a lot worse:
A separate accident occurred last Wednesday afternoon on Baker Drive west of Queen City.
A two-year-old Amish girl’s head was run over by the wheel of a hay wagon, and her abdomen was possibly stepped on by a horse.
Deputy Crawford said investigators were unsure if the abdomen injuries were caused by the horse or by the wagon wheel.
Crawford said the toddler was rushed by ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center, where she underwent surgery for internal bleeding.
Her head injury did not prove to be too serious.
Thank God for that. The little girl was flown to another medical center for precautionary reasons.
The attention-getting bit of course, is two such incidents happening twice in one week, in unrelated accidents, in the same community.
Schuyler County has three Amish settlements, but the one in question is the Greentop community. While it’s the biggest in the county, it’s not exactly large, at an estimated 490 people.
So is this just a freak occurrence – to have two similar accidents in a relatively small community, in one week? I would say yes, that’s probably the best way to describe it. With a caveat…
The caveat is that I believe these types of accidents happen a lot more often than what we see making the news. This case may have gotten public attention in the form of a news story, since two similar accidents happened essentially back-to-back in the very same community.
When individual, isolated accidents occur, they’re not always – or even usually not – going to be reported.
All things considered, a farm – and maybe more so, an Amish farm – is not the safest place, physically, for children. Thank God it looks like these two little ones will recover from their injuries.

With the second report, it is likely that the younger child was not more seriously injured because they fell on earth, which could have some ‘give’, unlike the rigid surface of a road
