Amish Food

Peach pie and the latest from the Amish Cook

Busy Amish mom Lovina Eicher writes a weekly column from her home in a Michigan Amish community.  It’s carried in over 130 papers across the country. This week she shares some thoughts on spring cleaning and how Amish and non-Amish kids get along. Kevin Williams, Lovina’s editor, also runs an interesting blog-and-news site on the Amish.

Amish food fest

Looks like it will take a few weeks to verify whether yesterday’s Holmes County Amish Country eat-a-thon broke any records. I try to avoid buffets if I can.  The willpower required to avoid eating some of everything seems to take away from my enjoyment of the food itself. But wonder which of the happy eaters managed to taste the most dishes, and how many?  Perhaps…

World Record Buffet

No word in the press yet on whether the world buffet record fell yesterday. The feast was to be held at the Amish Flea Market in Holmes County.  Organizers expected 600 dishes, which would crush the previous record of 510, set in Las Vegas. Read more on Amish food.

Barefoot with the Amish Cook

Ever wonder why many Amish moms seem to prefer going barefoot while shucking corn or canning beans? The Amish Cook, Lovina Eicher, shares a bit in this excerpt from her column: The children just can’t wait until they can run outside barefooted. I caught a few of them trying to do it already. I don’t think the ground is warm enough yet, maybe once the…

Milk and cookies the way God intended?

AP Photo The Ohio Amish food safety issue goes higher profile, as the Washington Post, CBS News, and other big media outlets pick up the story today. Meanwhile, Time magazine is running a piece on the controversy surrounding raw milk, another popular Amish-sold product. Should these foodstuffs be regulated?  Should sellers be compelled to inform consumers of risks?  Or should these practices be shut down…

Amish food controversy

They love the stuff so much it hardly has a chance to sit on the shelves. Maybe that’s why no one seems to get ill from eating it. Mary Slabaugh, an Ohio Amish baker whose story was mentioned last month in Amish America, is in the news again, this time in Ohio’s Coshocton Tribune (no longer online). Officials are trying to deal with the challenge…

A Bumpy Buggy Ride on Wall Street

On the whole, I would definitely bet on Amish business. Just maybe not this one.  At least not right now, and definitely not with any of my Scottrade funds. Pasta-maker Amish Naturals, which we covered in January, undoubtedly has a good product, good intentions, and according to the analysts, good management behind it. But Chuck Jaffe at CBS Marketwatch claims the company may have fallen…

Sunday Morning

Sunday morning means church for the Amish. Amish services are held in members’ homes.  There can be a couple hundred people in attendance. The Amish group themselves into church districts of anywhere from 20 to 50 families, though they typically have around 25 to 35.  Each has a bishop, two or three ministers, and a deacon. Service lasts around three hours and includes sermons, Scripture…
