Sunday carriages
A view from yesterday afternoon in Lancaster County.
Sunday afternoons are probably the most intense for carriage traffic around here–families returning from church, or youth traveling to the evening’s singing.

If you’ve read this site for some time, you’ll know Don Burke has been a long-time contributor here, sharing his visits and top-notch photos from Amish communities around the country. For a few examples, see Don’s trips to Ethridge, Tennessee, inside a Missouri Amish home, or at an “Amish-ish” wedding. Today Don tells us the story of how he happened to first visit the Amish,…
Mike Sparks, who gave us a look at the Amish community in Ashland County, OH, returns to share his recent visit to the settlement in Holmes and Wayne Counties. Mike has been visiting and learning about the Amish for over four decades now. I’ll let Mike take it away with a little description of his background and then his photos of the early-July trip. If…
Just back from Lancaster County. Has been a whirlwind of finishing the final manuscript (submitted), looking ahead to finish the Polish-language Amish book (nearly done), and another top-secret project or two. But in between running around the County a few interesting happenings happened. I dragged my father up this time, for an intense week in Amish Boot Camp. When you are accustomed to the accoutrements…
It doesn’t get much more distant than Montana when it comes to the Amish. But distance hasn’t discouraged a few adventurous Amish souls from settling the 41st state. Â Today Montana is home to 5 Amish communities. Read more about the Montana Amish, their annual auctions, and–perhaps–the only Amish postmaster ever, in today’s State Guide entry on Montana Amish. Special thanks to James Anderson for providing…
Hi everyone, and thanks for all the feedback on the semi-controversial book video. I meant to post something from here in Lancaster County much sooner, but funny thing, every Amish home I visit claims their Wi-Fi connection is down. Frustrating. As I’m on some dodgy illicit kerosene-powered land line tucked away in a tobacco barn right now, and I don’t know how much longer it…
This is another installment in the 10 views series, featuring photos from my recent visit to the Holmes County, Ohio Amish community. Â I’ve included a few comments and links to relevant posts that you might enjoy. Sugarcreek is technically in Tuscarawas County. Â It’s often the first little town visitors to the area pass through. Â Many of the buildings in Sugarcreek’s “Swiss Village” downtown area…

Great pic! Actually all of your pictures are wonderful 🙂 Sometimes I wish we could slow down and travel by horse and buggy, but I’m afraid people would just look at us like we were completely insane here in western Washington!
Thanks for all the nice pics you include frequently!
Thanks everyone, my pleasure! More to come from Holmes County, Ohio.
Christina, you should give it a try–you’ll never know til you do! 😉
Hardly a day goes by that I wish I could walk outof this life of TV, electronic gadgets, wars, money, and a host of other insane things we do that the Amish don’t. We don’t “have it made” !! They do.
