Colorado Amish Communities
A nice article came out over the weekend in the Denver Post on new Colorado Amish settlements.  This group has received  a lot of attention lately, especially in the context of Amish migration.  Writer Ann Schrader includes some interesting information on how Amish have adapted to the local economy.
The land is not as conducive to farming as acreage in some Amish communities in the West, a fact that played out to the detriment of previous Amish attempts to settle Colorado. Businesses Amish are involved in include carpentry, baking, and bootmaking (read more on Denver Amish Furniture).
The Colorado families seem a good-natured bunch and not too terribly shy in the face of media attention, permitting numerous photos for the article, such as the one above of an Amish woman hanging rugs (taken by Judy DeHaas/Denver Post).  And at the end of the article, one Amishman interviewed by Schrader shares a classic joke on why Amish have so many children.  Read more on Colorado Amish in the Amish State Guide.

Interesting articles..thanks for the links.
We enjoyed the article and pictures. Ingenious use of an old satellite dish. My husband is curious to know if they still use the PA German language.
Erik-Thanks for yet another illuminating, interesting entry. The picture showing the solar panel caught my eye. It is/will be interesting to track Amish attitudes toward alternative fuels and, most important, their reach and application.
I dig her sandals. Some people might say black socks with sandals are a faux pas any time of the year, but for the woman it seems to fit plain and Colorado life in some parts. Or is she wearing sandals, I took a second look and I’m not sure, a second or third opinion anyone?
I love the pictures all over this site…
From what I can see I think they might be Crocs. Some say they are very comfortable. I could hardly walk after an hour in them. Whichever, sandals or crocs, they fit right in being black. 🙂
Happy to share this piece. I am old school, which means flip-flops. Barefoot if not too many rocks about. I have heard mixed opinions on Crocs too.
Kim to the best of my knowledge these are standard Old Order churches so would use PA German.
