Bonnet or Kapp? (Video)
In this video I take a look at some Amish women’s hair customs, including the difference between a bonnet and a kapp, differences in prayer covering styles, and whether Amish women cut their hair. Runtime: 4:36.

A recent re-read of a piece by Steven Nolt in Mennonite Quarterly Review–‘Who are the Real Amish? Rethinking Diversity and Identity among a Separate People’— made me recall a common dilemma when discussing our Plain neighbors. ‘The Amish’ is a moniker that tries to do more than it really can, which is blanket a group of people having quite diverse practices. Saying “‘the Amish’ this”…
A little piece of an interview with an Ohio Old Order Amish friend, ‘Leon’, speaking back in September of sports, cars and other matters adolescent: ‘When we first started we were 18-and-under’ Leon explains, talking about his softball team, ‘and we won the state of Ohio tournament, went down to Texas, and won the world tournament–Amish guys, Amish boys, 18-and-under.’ ‘I think I was 22…
This is not your typical Amish singing video. What we see here is something called the Sail & Sing Christian Cruise. It’s a tour company based out of New Holland, PA. So what are Amish doing on a cruise ship, you might be wondering? For those who wish to visit Europe (or anywhere overseas), ship travel is the only option sanctioned by many Amish churches…
There’s a communication challenge Amish people deal with that most of us do not. It’s the fact that in Amish communities, names repeat themselves. With a limited pool of surnames, and the popularity of Biblical and other traditional names, it’s inevitable that you find people with the same first and last names. How many Sam Stoltzfuses are there in Lancaster County? Or Mary Lehmans in northern Indiana? Or…
We’ve got the second batch of answers to your questions on the Amish, courtesy of Merlyn Yoder in northern Indiana. If you missed it, here are Merlyn’s replies to the first 17 questions. Below, you’ll find responses to 16 more. Today’s questions cover everything from waking up early to celebrating Christmas to tracking the weather to former Amish clothing. Thanks to everyone who asked a question, and a…
photo: Randall Persing ‘You can have any color you like, as long as it’s black’.  So said Henry Ford, perhaps mythically, about his quintessential Model T auto. If you’re an Amish woman, have any color you like, as long as it’s solid. Non-patterned dress is one thing that sets Amish women apart from other Plain peoples, such as Old Order Mennonites, Old Colony Mennonites, and…

Kapps
That was an interesting video–I would be interested in seeing a video on men’s head coverings. So, women should cover their heads in church and in prayer, does this rule also apply to men, or do they take their hats off when in church and in prayer?
Bonnet or Kapp?
Good video, Erik! Lamp shade-hahaha…, but I can see it. I’ve always thought some of them resemble paper cupcake liners. I guess that means we’re both imaginative.
Bonnet Strings
I noticed that the strings that I thought were to tie the kapp was hanging down the back.
Are they meant to be tied?
A late answer
Something I read from someone who had grown up Amish (Mrs. Dorcas Smucker) suggested that the kapp is now usually held onto the hair with pins, with some communities specifying tying them for church.
