Amish Youth: Uplifting Singing Around The Table

We’re not told where this singing video takes place, but the dress is Midwestern Amish. We see numerous Amish young people sitting around the table at what looks to be a youth gathering. This is a relatively new video, posted this past November.

You can see a wringer washer – are we in a basement, or some kind of utility room? I see some board games on the tables but I can’t make out which. Whoever’s doing the filming (I assume it’s Martin Yoder, who posted it) pans around the room, and you can spot some other interesting items – including a box from outdoor recreation company Cabela’s.

The video is titled “Amish gathering singing theres a love beyond the great divide” – but I can’t seem to find an official song title, though I did find some lyrics at this Facebook post. If anyone has more info I’ll update the post with it.

Nevertheless, the voices singing this uplifting hymn fill the space beautifully. It picks me up when I listen to singing like this.

      Phone?

Is that a cell phone that the young man to the far right has in his right hand, as though he’s answering a call? Might just be my creative imagination. Love this and will save it: a slice of young Amish life.

      1. Very well might be – this group looks like it could be one of those where they’d be fairly common among youth.

I notice an older Amish man at the back and also two older women.I guess they are there to make sure nothing happens that shouldn’t.

      1. Right, in many communities they have these “supervised singings”. Usually it’s the parents of the host family, and other parents will often come or stop in.

I would say the older couple owned the home!

I always feel so sorry for the women and girls having to wear such hideous clothing while the men and boys have so much more freedom.

I don’t find their clothing ” hideous” at all, just conservative & plain. I also don’t see that the men have “more freedom”, their clothing is likewise plain, maybe a bit old fashioned, but that is fine. They are loose, comfortable. Freedom from fashion! It’s their own kind of freedom.
