Amish CookingThe Amish have a rich culinary heritage.  Whether it’s shoofly pie or scrapple, Dutch cabbage rolls or doughnuts, “Amish cooking” means hearty and savory foods.  In this online guide you’ll find over 300 delicious recipes from the Amish and PA German cooking tradition.

Amish Cookbooks

If you’re looking for a print resource for Amish recipes, there are many choices available. Here are a few worth considering:

Amish Recipe BookThe Amish Cook– Lovina Eicher, aka “The Amish Cook”, is probably the best-known culinary source among the Amish, enjoying a national following.  With her editor Kevin Williams, she has published a number of cookbooks, such as The Amish Cook’s Baking Book, and The Amish Cook at Home.  Eicher also writes a weekly column carried in over 100 newspapers nationwide.

Amish Cooking MagazineCooking & Such– This quarterly, produced by Florida resident Sherry Gore, gathers recipes from across the Amish and Pennsylvania German traditions.  In addition to traditional recipes, Cooking & Such features creative takes on old favorites.  A recent issue offered tasty recipes for Gingerbread Waffles and Cheeseburger Soup.  You can subscribe to Cooking & Such at sherrygorebooks.com.

Amish CookbookLocal Amish Cookbooks– Often seen at dry goods stores in Amish communities.  Part of the fun here is in hunting down a cook book created by local Amish cooks, which often include local favorite recipes.  Women (and some men) in numerous Amish settlements contribute to community recipe books, which can usually be purchased at a reasonable price.  These cookbooks range from titles including the Lancaster County Amish Cook Book to Amish Country Cooking by the Amish of Rexford, Montana.

    1. Looking for a recipe

A few years ago I ran across a Chocolate Peanut butter frosting.
My house burned and of course the recipe was destroyed. It was the
best chocolate frosting I have ever eaten. It was in a magazine
with I think a meal plan. It was on a chocolate cake. The peanut
butter or the chocolate did not over power each other. If you know
of this recipe would you please send it to me. It was an Amish
      recipe.

      Respectfully,
      Jenny Crawford

      Cooking and Such magazine

Is it still in print? I would like to perhaps buy a subscription or some past copies but I can find nothing online about that.

      Thanks!

Where are there authentic amish recipes and who published them if it’s against Amish ways?

        Amish recipes

Some Amish run stores will sell Amish cookbooks, with recipes from the local community.

        1. Amish community cookbooks are common

As Marcus says Amish publish their own cookbooks, it’s quite common. Not sure where the idea that it’s against Amish ways comes from. I picked up one by Amish in Oklahoma this past December. Have also seen them from Amish in Montana, Pennsylvania and other states.

          1. Al in Ky

Several years ago I bought an Amish cookbook in the Fillmore County, Minn.
Amish settlement (Swartzentruber) to give as a gift. The cookbook was interesting because it had many recipes and all were hand-written. I think it was then made into a cookbook and printed by a local printer.

    7. Unique Old Order Amish Cookbook

Hey everyone! I’m closely involved with several different communities in Ohio from southern Ohio, central and northern Ohio as well as communities in KY & Wv and I’ve been working on a unique cookbook with the women from different areas. These are family recipes that are hand written and passed down several generations. I’m currently in the process of transferring these to typed copy and adding to a book. Added to each recipe will be the name and community of the person who shared it with me. I am offering a free downloadable PDF of a portion of the book for review if anyone is interested in checking it out! Simply jump over to my Facebook page and comment “interested in PDF cookbook “ and I’ll get in contact with you right away! Our Facebook page is Southern Ohio Amish Connection! Hope to see ya there!

      * Business consultant * since I have built a good relationship with the Old Order Amish in my community as well as others across 4 states, I serve as a business consultant to help them connect with people looking for the services or products that they offer- I would be happy to help connect you, given that you reside in or close to the areas i serve in ohio, Wv & Ky-

Feel free to email me at jo011775@gmail.com concerning either of the above topics- simply put Amish in the subject line and I’ll be in touch or check out our Facebook page and send me a message via messenger!

      Have a great day!

      Amish Red Beet Eggs

I think it is interesting how the Amish culture, especially as it pertains to food has permeated the US generally. I think it is also interesting how some folks like to add the “Amish” moniker on to recipes regardless of their true origin. The website I linked to has some interesting research on a specific recipe for Red Beet Eggs or as some “Non-amish” call them, pickled eggs and beets!
