ND Amish craftsmanship

North Dakota Amish FurnitureA North Dakota Amish Furniture Guide North Dakota has seen little Amish settlement, but at least two Amish furniture retailers can be found in ND–in Bismarck and Grand Forks, meaning Amish woodcraft is also within reach of North Dakota cities like Fargo and Minot.

The Amish furniture industry has thrived in recent years, achieving popularity in North Dakota and beyond.  Amish craft solid wood furnishings for the kitchen, living room, dining room, office, and more–every room of the home.  Beds, tables, chairs, desks, bookshelves, dressers, and kitchen cabinets are among the many Amish-made furniture pieces available.

 North Dakota Amish roots

Though they no longer live in North Dakota, Amish had a continuous presence in the state for over 50 years through the first half of the 20th century.  Amish lived in locations including Pierce and Rolette Counties, Foster County, Ward County, and Barnes County (see David Luthy, The Amish in America: Settlements that Failed 1840-1960).

Harsh climate, unfavorable farming conditions, and distance from other Amish are among the reasons North Dakota has seen limited Amish settlement.  Neighboring states including Minnesota, Montana, and as of 2010 South Dakota all currently have Amish communities.

Family woodworking shops

Furniture-making has emerged as an attractive occupation for Amish over the past few decades.  Through much of their history, “Amish” and “farming” were nearly synonymous.  In recent times, the growth in real estate prices in their traditional homelands has placed traditional dairy farm ownership out of reach for many Amish.  Small enterprise, including the woodworking trades, has allowed Amish to maintain a presence at home, while making a living through a manual skill.

Amish families typically work together and cooperate on different levels in order to run a successful woodworking shop or other type of small business.  Amish men are the traditional breadwinners in Plain society, but Amish women contribute economically on multiple levels, including through assistance in furniture shops and other businesses.

Amish children and youth also gain from the experience, having a chance to share in the work and develop a strong ethic for hard labor from the early years.  While Amish kids have plenty of time to play, they know they are expected to do their work and chores, and having a venue such as an at-home furniture shop provides a place where they can learn the importance of contributing to family as well as the ins and outs of business.

Amish furniture is renowned for its many styles and high quality.  The use of solid hardwoods helps set Amish apart from mass-produced furniture relying on particle board, veneer, or pressed wood.  Amish furniture is traditionally crafted used hard woods such as oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and others.  Styles include Shaker, Mission, Queen Anne, Primitive, Prairie, Colonial, and more.

I have about 20+ big oaks

      Hi,
I just took down around 24 big old oak trees in my pasture. An excavator tipped them over and piled them up. Roots still attached. I am going to try to sell them. I was wondering if a place like yours is interested?
      Thanks,
      Shannon
