Empire State Amish
Though most don’t realize it, Amish have a long history in the state of New York. Amish originally settled the Empire State in the early-mid 1800s, though the current oldest NY Amish community dates from the late 1940s.
Today, New York’s Amish community numbers over 23,000 people, found in over 50 settlements across the state (see the Amish Studies website for more). Significant Amish communities can be found in the Conewango Valley area, Western NY, Heuvelton near the Canadian border, and the Mohawk Valley in central NY.
New York has seen high levels of Amish migration in recent years, with Amish attracted to the abundant farmland located in upstate New York. Amish settlers in New York have both set up farms and opened many small businesses, including furniture shops. Today the New York Amish population is the 5th-largest in the nation. Read more about NY Amish.
Woodworking tradition
Furniture making has been a key industry for Amish in New York and elsewhere. Amish have found woodworking an accessibly trade, particularly compared to the high costs of starting a farm. Amish furniture shops are typically started on Amish property in close proximity to the home. Amish men may start a furniture “sideline” in addition to a regular job, as a part-time supplement to income. Amish furniture shops may be one-man operations, employ family and a few neighbors, or carry payrolls of 30 employees or more.
Amish appreciate furniture-making and other small business for the fact that it permits Amish fathers to work at home, rather than in factories or in other trades requiring travel, as is the case in some Amish communities. Amish feel that parents being at home is important for the sake of children and maintaining a strong family. This is one reason they appreciate agriculture. For the Amish, furniture making replicates this aspect in some sense.
A furniture shop on the home property also gives children a chance to learn a work ethic from an early age. Young Amish children will often be given small tasks and chores to take care of. This helps them develop an appreciation for hard work. After graduation from the 8th grade (Amish children typically finish their formal education at age 14-15), an Amish boy may go to work for the family woodworking business, or at another furniture shop in the neighborhood. Amish youth develop furniture making skills through this apprentice-style system.
Amish wives and daughters may even be involved in the home furniture shop to some degree. Amish housewives, in addition to their large at-home workloads, may assist with the furniture business–doing bookwork or helping with customers. The same goes for Amish daughters–and in some cases Amish girls do manual work as well, for instance in Amish finishing shops.
Furniture has become a key industry for Amish, comprising a major segment of the thousands of Amish small enterprises found across the nation. Amish furniture has thrived in response to high demand from furniture consumers who appreciate the exceptional qualities of Amish woodcraft.
“Heirloom Quality” home furnishings
Amish businesses have thrived for a number of reasons. One is the commitment to common-sense financial management common within Amish culture. Amish furniture is not always the cheapest, but typically offers good value for money. Amish furniture businesses do spend money on advertising, but also generate a lot of their business through word-of-mouth and repeat customers. Fancy shops and other frivolous expenditures are rare among Amish.
Amish furniture is regarded as high quality. One reason for this reputation is the skill of Amish craftsman. As noted already, Amish youth often begin learning the furniture trade early. The early start allows them to accumulate many years of experience in the woodworking trade.
Another factor leading to high quality products is the use of top-notch materials. Amish furniture is typically made of solid hardwood. This includes wood varieties such as oak, cherry, maple, walnut, black walnut, and more. Amish also create furniture from soft woods like pine and cedar. Rustic hickory furniture is another popular category (including hickory rockers, tables, etc).
Amish furniture sellers often advertise the fact that their furniture is created without the use of particle board, veneer, or pressed wood. The end result is a durable, long-lasting product that is often pegged as “heirloom quality”. Indeed it is not hard to see Amish furniture pieces being passed from one generation to the next.
Amish furniture producers have also exhibited a high level of versatility in the furniture they create. Furniture typical to Amish homes is often crafted in plain and basic styles. However for their customers Amish craftsmen are able to fashion a broad range of furniture designs, including Mission, Colonial, Queen Anne, Shaker, Arts and Crafts, Craftsman, Prairie, as well as contemporary styles that wouldn’t look out of place in an urban loft setting in New York City. The ability of Amish furniture craftsmen to respond to market demand has led to their high level of success in the competitive US furniture industry.
Where to find Amish furniture in New York
Amish furniture seekers in the Empire State have many choices. Some potential Amish furniture buyers are drawn to the idea of purchasing direct from an Amish furniture shop. As mentioned above, there are numerous communities across the state where Amish furniture craftsmen can be found. A visit to an Amish furniture workshop provides a unique experience well beyond what you’d encounter at a local strip mall. Amish settlements in New York with furniture craftsmen include Clymer, the Conewango Valley, the North Country, as well as the Mohawk Valley areas.
For those wanting to find Amish furniture in more conveniently-located settings, New York state is home to over 3 dozen Amish furniture outlets. Many New York Amish furniture stores are located in or near major cities (Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, and others), providing easy access to large showrooms, and in many cases offering home delivery. New York Amish furniture buyers can also
, from one of a wide range of internet-based Amish furniture dealers. Most online outlets offer shipping of Amish furniture to New York locations as well as other destinations.
