Amish Furniture – Alaska

Hardwood quality in the Land of the Midnight Sun

ak amish furnitureSearching for an Alaska Amish furniture retailer?  Pennsylvania Dutch country may lie far from the Last Frontier state, but Alaska residents have options for Amish-made tables, chairs, dining sets and more.

Amish have never lived in Alaska, though a group of Amish visited the state in 2010 to scout land. Though they decided not to settle in Alaska for now, handcrafted Amish furniture is available in AK. While no stores are located in Juneau, Amish furniture can be found in Anchorage.

Family-friendly small shops

Amish have long been known for their dairy farms.  But in recent decades, Amish society has seen an explosion in the number of furniture craftsmen.  Amish wood working shops are a phenomenon of high growth and a lack of affordable farmland.

Woodworking is a near-ideal occupation for Amish families

Amish have grown rapidly for two reasons–large families, averaging 7 or more children, and a high rate of joining the Amish church (85% or more).  High populations and expensive farm land in places like Lancaster County has led Amish to seek land in new destinations–including New England, the South, and Western states like Montana and Colorado.

Furniture shops are a great solution for some Amish families, since they require relatively little land and a smaller investment to start.  Some Amish start sideline businesses making cabinets, children’s furniture, occasional items, or any of a number of pieces.

Old Order craftsmanship for every room of the home

Those examples are just the tip of the iceberg, however.  The range of Amish furniture items is vast.  Office suites, bedroom sets, bar stools, hickory rockers and tables, clocks, kitchen tables, sofas and recliners, desks, bookshelves, bunk beds, and many more items are available from Amish craftsmen.  The styles range from classics such as Queen Anne, Mission and Shaker, to the most contemporary designs.

Amish products are known both for their attention to detail and for their use of high-quality materials.  Solid hardwood is typical of Amish furniture; pressed wood, fiberboard, and particle board are not commonly used.  Walnut, cherry, maple, oak, ash, and a variety of other hardwoods are preferred by Amish woodworkers.  A network of Amish finishing shops provides the final coating in a wide range of stains.

Will Amish ever live in Alaska?  As Plain society continues to grow, the need for land and new places to live will remain.  Though farming in Alaska is less than ideal for Amish, small businesses such as furniture shops provide a viable option.  Who knows?  Perhaps one day in the future Alaska will have its own band of Amish furniture makers.

    3. repair

My daughter bought a wonderful/beautiful Amish made glider/rocking chair about 15 years ago. After rocking 2 babies, the chair has developed a problem. Having moved down to the northern border of Washington state, she is trying to find a person to repair the chair. Any help you can give us in finding a repair person able to restore the chair would be gratefully appreciated. Grateful thanks from the rocking grandmother. Agnes Schewe
