Though few Amish live in the Deep South today, in the early 20th century, Amish lived in southern Alabama in Baldwin County, where they farmed sweet potatoes and other crops (see David Luthy, The Amish in America: Settlements that Failed 1840-1960, pp. 11-23).  Warm climate is one reason relatively few Amish have made their homes in the South.

Amish have settled most heavily in Pennsylvania and the Midwest.  In recent years, farmland has become quite expensive in these traditional locations, placing the dream of farming out of reach for the younger generations.  Small business, including furniture-making, has become more and more attractive an option for the Amish.  Amish have a growing tradition of furniture-building, with some furniture shops approaching their second and even third generation of ownership.
