Amish Auctions – November 2014

Hard to believe we’re already inching up to November. This being the first year we’ve been tracking Amish auctions, I thought their numbers would start to dwindle by now. It looks like that they might be the case.

Still, this month our dedicated compiler was able to find a decent number of events, but few so far for December.

As they are typically open-air affairs, auctions are more suited to warmer months, so that’s not surprising.

This month’s list includes events in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and even Texas.

There are a couple of non-auction events thrown in as well. As always your additions are welcome.

On last year’s edition, Amish America commenter Jessie OBrien wrote:

“I attended and consigned antiques to the Borntrager Annual Auction held Nov 2013 at their farm. The auction was well attended and lasted all day. Animals, furniture, quilts, buggies, farm equipment and much more was sold. Two auction rings were going at the same time, and a separate building was set up for the selling of food and drinks. It was a really fun day, and I am looking forward to the next auction.”

      Any "traveling" sales?

As usual, I can’t make any of these (but will appreciate any comments/photos from those who do attend), but I am curious to know whether anyone has ever heard of any “traveling” Amish sales? (Meaning traveling more than just a few miles in a localized area.)I know that there are hundreds of “crafters” (English) who travel the “craft sales” circuit in my area (Northern IL, Southern WI), reserving space at Spring & Fall (as an example) craft shows which are held at local schools, churches, hotels, etc. They’re usually pretty well attended, and I often see the same crafters at different locations in my area, year after year. I would think that if several Amish districts could consolidate various crafts, furniture, quilts, home-canned items, load it all up in a commercial vehicle, and come to a large venue here, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if everything could be sold in a day. If the Amish themselves were the sales people at such an event, I’m sure that would help ensure their success.

Just wondering if anything like this goes on…I’d make it a point to attend!

I appreciate seeing these event lists and all it takes to produce them. Thank you!

      1. Mobile Amish Sales

I haven’t heard of what you describe among the Amish Alice Mary, what comes to mind when I think travel and sales with the Amish is the permanent PA Dutch markets in cities like Baltimore and Philadelphia. Not the same thing, I know, but it shows you Amish business people are willing to go a distance to market their products. Maybe this is an idea for someone.

I’d like to pass the thanks on to our anonymous compiler who has been doing the heavy lifting on these lists since May.
