2013 Amish Conference Live Stream (& Blog)

I’m prepping to leave for Pennsylvania tomorrow for the Amish technology conference, which begins this Thursday at Elizabethtown College.  It’s going to be an interesting 3 days of seminars, tours, posters, panels, food, catching up with friends and acquaintances, and hopefully making some new ones.  There will be a lot to take in and I’m going to fill the noggin with whatever I can.

I’ve been asked if any of the conference will be made available online. There is some good news in that area. It turns out that 5 conference sessions will be streamed live online, including 3 of the 4 plenary sessions and a panel with the authors of The Amish.

Here is the schedule for the 5 live streamed sessions:

Thursday, June 6
3:30-5:00 p.m. Seminar: “From the Buggy to the Byte: How the Amish Tame Technology” – Donald B. Kraybill
7:00 p.m. Plenary Session: “What the Amish Can Teach (and Learn From) Nerds and Geeks” – Kevin Kelly

Friday, June 7
10:30 a.m. Plenary Session: “A Tale of Two Kitchens: Gender and Technology in Amish Communities” – Karen Johnson-Weiner
“Gender and The Amish” (film) Callie Wiser
1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Panel: Meet the Authors of THE AMISH
Authors Donald Kraybill, Karen Johnson-Weiner, and Steven Nolt discuss their new book

Saturday, June 8
11:15 a.m. Plenary Session: “Amish Participation in Medical Research: A Partnership of Trust and Mutual benefit” – Alan Shuldiner

So if you can’t make the conference, you’ll at least be able to watch some of the sessions live.  Just click over to the conference live stream, where coverage will begin 5 minutes before the start of each session.

Conference blogging

I will also be posting on the conference here beginning Thursday, Friday, and unusual for this site, Saturday as well. It won’t quite be “live” but I do plan to post updates several times each day.

If there’s a session or aspect of the conference you’d like me to blog about let me know in the comments below.  There are many sessions and I won’t be able to be everywhere but I will do what I can do.  I’m looking forward to meeting those of you who can make it (and exchanging some “live” comments!)

Thanks for giving us this information. I’m especially interested in Kelly’s session on Thurs. evening. Looking forward to reading
      your blogs about the conference.

      1. Al it will be fun to have a few running posts going. I think I’ll have enough to post about 🙂

Kelly’s book was very interesting (What Technology Wants). Did you or anyone else read it? The “Amish Hackers” chapter was interesting but I thought the whole thing was very good. Made me think about technology differently.

    2. Excellent! Do you know if they will also be recorded for later viewing? Also, I assume this is Eastern time zone?

      1. I have not heard anything official on recordings. I’ll let know when I do. And yes this is EST.

Thank you so much for giving us this information. I will try and watch all the conferences that are streamed live. It will require some thinking on my part, though, because I live in the Mountain Time Zone, and can confuse myself so easily! 🙂

I’m also looking forward to reading your blogs about the conference, Erik. Your work is always excellent!

      1. Thanks Margaret, it will be fun. I printed out the full schedule yesterday and was trying to decide which sessions to direct my body to.

Unfortunately cannot split myself into 7 parts as I would like to, going by the numerous interesting sessions happening simultaneously.

I also know there are a few sessions I will be required to be a part of (though they all look to be interesting).

I’ll be asking others for their feedback as well.

    4. Conference reporting

I’d be happy to share updates on any sessions I attend that you have to miss. So much great stuff going on–I’d love to see the whole conference taped.

      1. Thank you Marta! I will miss the ones on the weekend so that would be great if I could watch them at a later date. By the way, love your books! 🙂 I just recently shared Hide In Plain Sight on my deal blogging site.

        1. Thanks, Rose. I’m glad you enjoy them.

    5. Mary

I want to hear more about this.

    6. Interesting!

I plan to tune in for what my schedule allows, and take notes!

      How appropriate!

I remember reading about this last year, and it piqued my interest. I can’t go there in person, and I have to work during most of it, but I do have Friday off and will try to remember to be “ready” at 9:30 a.m. Central for the “Tale of Two Kitchens.”

Thanks for the heads up, Erik. Have a great time, and May your noggin overfloweth with info & such…which you can then pass on here!

      Alice Mary

      1. Thanks Alice Mary, if the noggin cooperates, then it shall be so 🙂

I don’t know about this conference, but it’s my experience that most events like this that are streamed live are saved online for at least a while for viewing by those not able to attend at the time. Thanks for posting this schedule, though, so at least I can catch a couple of things live even if they aren’t saved.
