Sunday Morning

Sunday morning means church for the Amish.

Amish services are held in members’ homes.  There can be a couple hundred people in attendance.

The Amish group themselves into church districts of anywhere from 20 to 50 families, though they typically have around 25 to 35.  Each has a bishop, two or three ministers, and a deacon.

Service lasts around three hours and includes sermons, Scripture readings, and singing–but nothing like your typical church hymns.

Amish sing from the Ausbund–the traditional hymn book–in a very drawn-out manner, with single notes held for what seems an eternity.  For the uninitiated, it can be eerie.

Following church, the Amish socialize and eat–usually a light meal whose highlights include bread, peanut butter mixed with marshmallow creme, and coffee.

If you want to see a busy person, find an Amish housewife in the week or two leading up to church being held in her home.  This is traditionally the time of the year to give the house a top-to-bottom cleaning.

When you consider the usually immaculate state of most Amish homes, it’s hard to imagine where they find the dirt to clean, but apparently they do.
