    One more place to visit...

Nice stories & photos. But why don’t (or can’t) they use photos of furniture in their advertising? There are some interesting pieces there, it seems, especially a rather modern upholstered rocker in one photo.

I swear I could smell the sawdust as I viewed the photos of the workshop.

I think this story will help generate some business, including word-of-mouth. I wish the Yoders continued success!

    Phone Service

For clarity, are they saying they only have one phone for the whole community, or just that the phone Mark uses is at the school?

And before they got voice mail how would they know when someone had called? Do they use caller ID?

I wonder what other conservative ways they live. Like Alice Mary said, it looks like a good place to go visit!

    • Tom I don’t know the answers but I passed your question along to the folks at Amish Furniture Factory who did the interview.

      Community Phone & VM

Hi Tom, thanks for your questions. The phone in the school is the only one in the surrounding area that the community uses. Since it’s a small community, one phone seems to be enough.

Before voice mail was allowed, they did not have the ability to take messages. The phone was used only to call out, or to schedule a call-time in advance from a previous call or letter mail. No caller ID is used.

I would definitely recommend making a trip to the area. The countryside is beautiful and the people are warm and friendly.

      Regards, Toby

        Thanks Toby and Erik.

When I look in the 2009 Iowa Amish directory it shows 3 church districts for the area. I have heard of places where one phone serves 4-5 families, but not a whole community. (even if it’s just for one district that’s a lot of people)

This is a place I will hit before the years up.

    It's a small world...

    Toby,

Turns out that Marks wife Millie family is in Pawnee City Nebraska… where I was at last night for a Amish School Benefit meal. I talked to her sister Edna and saw her brothers that are living at home. Nice people!

Yet another reason to stop over to Iowa.

    Made it!
Had an extended holiday so took a trip to Amish places in Missouri and Iowa…hitting Milton along the way.

Toby, you left out a couple of things from the great report you made.

    1) I wish you had taken a picture of the neat display on the front counter. It’s maybe a foot tall by a little more wide. It looks like a machine in the middle…with a log being fed in from the left hand side and a nice desk coming out of the right side. (Shame on me for not taking a picture myself) A must see at the store!

    2) And the other thing you left out is that Mark looks like he is 15! *smiles* He’s a nice guy. There are enough little as well as big items there that you are sure to find something you will like. I focus on wooden kid toys and bought 2 of them as well as a wall hanging hat/coat holder.

I highly recommend stopping at this place, even if only to look around.

This machine with the log on one side and a desk coming out the other side sounds like the ones my cousin from Arthur Illinois makes.
